Before I forget, and in case somebody missed it, I’m putting up a link to what I believe is a enlightening CNN 22 May 2011 telecast of Fareed Zakaria’s
“Global Public Square”.
The lead 17 minutes or so presents four young Egyptians who allegedly where (and are) very much involved in this years protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. Not surprisingly their English is impeccable and their demeanor is very much that of politically aware westerners. Their views on President Obama’s speech on the Middle East are worth listening to. The rest of the telecast is OK but not nearly as riveting as the first part.
While the “Arab Spring” is no doubt an important event in our time on this globe, I am still a skeptic. I believe, in the short term, these events will have outcomes that we members of the “Western World” will not like. I keep going back to the European Revolutions of 1848. This was a similar convulsion (IMHO) that had no real lasting effects but was a precursor to two cataclysmic World Wars and a unstable superpower confrontation before some long term stability settled on the European continent.
